Ok. Not the best

The rod is harder and not near as sparky as the uberlebin or the bayite, but it works fine. I like the fact that they added a small capsule for a small fire starter (tinder, extender,or excellerant). Five feet of Paracord, and a way to attach it to your belt or pack are definitely pluses that others simply do not offer .

Very Useful Fire Starter!

I needed a fire starter kit for my camping and backpacking gear. This one is a great multi-use set with a nice paracord clip that you can clip onto your backpack. There is plenty of room to clip other items onto this as well. The bottle opener actually works well too! The dense cotton tinder also works great. I was able to get a fire started in no time. The container holding the cotton is waterproof so you don't have to worry about getting it wet. The striker also has a small ruler on it, although I'm not sure what I'd use it for. The fire starter rod is NOT magnesium - its iron. To use it, you do have to scrape the paint away from it first - so there is a bit of work involved to get to the unpainted surface. I'm not sure why they paint it - except maybe trying to prevent rust from forming since it is iron-based? Either way - it seems to work pretty well and get a spark every time. Overall it is a well-made unit and will last quite a long time. I'm pretty happy with it!

Great ferro rod.

This ferro rod kit was great. The rod works as expected. Really like the air tight cotton holder. Emergency rope is always great to have. All the clips are great for backpacks besides the one holding the rod. That clip going threw the rod can easily hook on a branch and come loose. Kinda the most important part. You should replace that.

Good for primitive camping

This is useful. The airtight tube to store cotton or any other starter seals completely! It takes technique to start it. Don’t think a newbie is going to strike and it start a fire immediately. That’s only in the cartoons. However this makes it easier than if you were a contestant on Survivor. I like that it also has a paracord with it. I’ve never needed one, but seems to be a good thing to have. Seems like good quality. Nice and compact and all held together so you don’t lose pieces.

Excellent fire starter

This is a compact camping tool any enthusiast of the woods should learn how to use & of course own. The Ferrocerium rod sparks freely with the included metal tool and even better with a solid knife. The addition of the dry cotton in a waterproof container can assist as needed to ignite your tinder. This would be a welcome piece of equipment on water bound trips - especially if your equipment got soaked. Having the five (5) feet of paracord can come in handy for many camping activities including tent line repair, draw cords on clothing & even use to wrap around a pile of sticks to better handle on uneven surfaces. Highly recommended as a gift for an avid camper or scout and it does really work in the rain.
